Maoists plan upsurge to capture power in Nepal

Kathmandu : After failing to get their leader elected as the Prime Minister, the Maoists are planning to launch a mass movement or a sort of revolution to capture power in Nepal.

” The Maoists have began preparation to capture state power through peoples’ movement,” published media reports said on Tuesday quoting Maoist Party vice-chairman Mohan Baidya as saying.

The preparations to capture power are on since many senior leaders in the party have preferred that the Moaist leader, Prachanda, not to contest for Prime Ministerial post for the eighth round of elections, slated for September 26.

“The party has been left with no option but to wage the revolt as efforts are on to bar the Maoists from going into power,” Nepalnews quoted Baidya as saying. The Maoist leader’s statement has come at a time when the party has failed to get the support of the majority of MPs to lead the government.

Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda and Nepali Congress leader Ram Chandra Paudel are in the fray for the Prime Minister’s post after incumbent Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal resigned two months ago.

Seven rounds of election were held but none of the candidates has been able to get simple majority of 301 MPs.

Some of the Maoists leaders blamed India for blocking the Maoists to form the government. Baidya’s allegation against New Delhi came when Maoists were facing charges for arranging funds from China to buy lawmakers in a scandal dubbed as “Chinagate.”

Mr Baidya said, ”Maoists are victims of conspiracy to bar them from forming a legitimate government. So, our ultimate aim is to capture state power sooner or later by waging fresh peoples’ revolt.”

He said his party had already started preparations for the peoples’ revolt, adding that the month-long protest programmes, announced by a meeting of the Central Committee on Sunday is a prelude to such a revolt. The Maoists have planned a month-long agitation starting from September 17.
