Kolkata : Popular author Dominique Lapierre visited Kolkata recently with the aim of continuing his help towards poor people.
He has specially worked for the poor people of Sunderban with the help of a West Bengal based non-governmental organization (NGO) Southern Health Improvement Samity (SHIS).
SHIS felicitated Dominique for his contribution in the development of living condition of poor people of Sunderban and across the globe.
Md. A. Wohab said,Director, said, ?SHIS has been helping the inhabitants of Sunderbans living on isolated islands, who are extremely poor and are victims to frequent climatic disorders.
SHIS has achieved tremendous success in helping eradicate poverty and several diseases to a large extent. And all these programmes would not have bee possible without the help of Dominique Lapierre.?
Till date, Lapierre’s account of financial help amounts to 60 million dollars, which in Indian currency is equivalent to Rs.270 crore.
Because of his help, the islanders of Sunderbans are getting medical assistance, even in the remotest areas where no government aid has been able to reach.
Besides, Padma Bhushan Dominique Lapierre has donated four medical boats to SHIS, to cater to the need of the people of Sunderbans.
Lapierre gained popularity for authoring books, including, ?Freedom at Midnight? and ?Five past midnight in Bhopal?.
