Chandigarh : Kings XI Punjab narrowly beat defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders by four runs in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium here Tuesday.

Chasing 158 for victory, the Knight Riders managed 153 for nine. The lower order of the Kolkata team failed to fire after Gautam Gambhir (60) and Eoin Morgan (47) had put them in the driver’s seat.

Azhar Mahmood was the pick of the Punjab bowlers taking three for 21 while Praveen Kumar and Parvinder Awana took two wickets apiece.

Manpreet Gony’s brutal attack – 42 off 18 balls – towards the fag end of the innings was key to Punjab posting a fighting total.

Sunil Narine took a hat-trick while Jacques Kallis too took three wickets. The duo were ably supported by Sri Lankan spinner Sachithra Senanayake, who had figures of two for 28.
