India win two gold medals, one silver from athletics

India started their campaign in the track and field event in style with two gold and a silver medals in the Asian Games here on Sunday.
Preeja Sreedharan and Kavita Raut won the gold and silver in the women’s 10,000 metres while Sudha Singh won the gold in the 3000 metres steeplechase event
In a tight finish, Sudha stuck out her neck at the finishing line to beat China’s Yuan Jin for the gold with a personal best timing of 9:55.67 sec.
Yuan won the silver, clocking 9:55.71. Japan’s Minori Hayakari settled for the bronze clocking 10:01.25 secs.
In the 10,000 metres race, Preeja clocked a personal best timing of 31:50.47 seconds to win the first gold athletics medal for India. The gold was also the day’s second for India and the fourth overall.
Kavita also registered her personal best timing of 31:51.44 seconds while Shitay Habtegebrel finished third in 31:53.27 seconds.
