Liquor baron Vijay Mallya quits Mohun Bagan to place his son Sidhartha V. Mallya
Kolkata : Liquor baron Vijay Mallya has resigned from his post as the director and chairman of the Board of Directors of United Mohun Bagan Football Team Privater Limited.
“His resignation has been accepted with deep regret by the board of directors of the company in a meeting held on Dec 16 here,” Mohun Bagan website said on Monday.
Meanwhile, Sidhartha V. Mallya, son of the high proflile business magnet, has been appointed as an Additional Director of the club.
“We appreciate the contribution of Mallya for the growth and development of the company and for his tremendous support to Football in particular,” the club said in a statement.
Though Mohun Bagan has not given any reason why Mallya quit the club, but sources said the resignation was in line with Asian Football Federation’s (AIFF) directive that an I-League team cannot be sponsored by a person, who holds position in two clubs.
Mallya is also the Chairman of East Bengal Club, which is known as Kingfisher East Bengal Club.
The UG Group, which is owned by Mallya, sponsor both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal.
AIFF president Praful Patel had said any club which did not fulfill all the criteria by Dec 31 would not be allowed to play in the I-League- 2011-12 season.
