Swiss star Roger Federer tames Rafael Nadal to win ATP tour
London : Swiss star Roger Federer demolished World No 1 Rafael Nadal 6-3, 3-6 6-1 at the season ending contest to win ATP Tour at the 02 Arena here Sunday night.
The 29-year-old former World No 1 clinched the title in 1 hour 37 minutes to win the title for the fifth time, that promised an interesting year in tennis game in 2011.
Nadal had fought hard to make in the last two after a three-hour semi-final match 7-6(7/5), 3-6 , 7-6 (8/5) against England’s Andy Murray on Saturday, whilst the Swiss had an easy game over Serbia’s Novak Djokovic 6-1 6-4.
And while Sunday’s final never quite matched the heights of their last meeting in London – Nadal’s epic 2008 Wimbledon final victory – it proved beyond doubt that Federer will be chasing hard on the world number one’s heels next year.
Federer, who picked up a cheque for just over $1m for his week’s work, said: “I’ve really enjoyed playing here, it’s been a wonderful atmosphere once again. Rafa’s had an amazing year, one any player dreams of.”
Admitting to have been outplayed, Spain star Nadal said, “I want to congratulate Roger. He (Roger) played unbelievable throughout the whole week. It was a fantastic year for me also, probably the most emotional of my career.”
