Literacy rate improves in Goa: Census
Goa had added 1,10,055 lakh people to its population in the last one decade, which sees a growth of 8.17 percent, as per provisional figures of the Census of India 2011.
The census figures released on Thursday says that the literacy rate has increased by 11 percent.
Besides, the population has gone up to 14.57 lakh as compared to 13.47 lakh population in 2001. Director Census Operations A K Wasnik told reporters today that out of the 14.47 lakh population, 53463 are males and 56592 are females.
Of the total population, seven people have claimed that they belong to ?other gender category ? neither male nor female.?
Wasnik said that enumerators recorded least population in Codvol village (Sattari taluka) has the least population with only five people whereas Shiroda village (Ponda taluka) has the maximum inhabitants as the enumerators here have recorded 14030 people.
Similarly, Pernem municipality has the least population with only 5025 people whereas Margao has the maximum 87678 population.
The effective literacy rate in 2001 was 76 percent which has been improved to 87 percent in 2011 census which includes 92.1 percent males and 81.84 females. The density of population per sq km is 394.
