One person was killed and another was injured when they leapt off a truck being ferried on a goods train near Pernem railway station in north Goa, 45 km from here.
A Konkan Railway spokesperson said that the incident occurred around 8 p.m. Friday when a truck on board a RORO carriage (the ‘roll on roll off’ service provided by the KR) caught fire on the goods train from Suratkal in Karnataka to Kolad in Maharashtra. RoRo allows public transport trucks to be loaded and secured on to train rakes and ferried to destinations.
“The fire started in the truck’s cabin. The truck’s driver and the cleaner jumped off the moving train after the fire started,” a spokesperson said. While one was injured, unconfirmed reports said the other died.
Police sources said they were probing the reason for the fire and suspect that it could have occurred when the truck driver started a fire to warm his meal on the moving rake.
