Tremors in Goa was an earthquake: MET

After initial denial, Indian Meteorological Observatory (MET), Goa station on Tuesday confirmed that a minor earthquake hit Goa?s Sanguem taluka on January 6.

MET department has measured it to 2.2 in magnitude on the Richter scale.

?It was a minor earthquake which was recorded on the Real Time Seismic Monitoring Network. The data on the gadget was transmitted and analysed by Delhi headquarters. We received a report only on Monday,? Meteorologist K V Singh said.

Sanguem residents at 6:54am on January 6 experienced tremors and informed the local authorities.

MET officials initially refused to agree that it was an earthquake.

An inspection was nonetheless carried out since the tremors were felt near Selaulim dam, which is Goa?s biggest water reservoir.

The MET department?s report was also sent to South Goa disaster management and e-governance cell. Government officials have taken the matter on priority and are considering proposing to install seismograph near the dam.
