Fresh snowfall likely in Kashmir Valley

With fresh western disturbances (WD) approaching the Kashmir Valley, the weather office here Saturday forecast another spell of moderate to heavy snowfall beginning Monday.

“Another WD is approaching the Valley under whose influence light to moderate snowfall would occur at most places with rather heavy snowfall in the Pir Panchal mountain range from Feb 20 to Feb 23. The main weather activity is expected on Feb 21-22,” Sonam Lotus, director of the local weather office, told IANS.

“Both road and air traffic is likely to get disrupted during this period,” he added.

The day temperatures are likely to fall by 4-5 degrees while the night temperatures would rise by a degree during this period.

Western disturbance is a term used to describe an extra tropical storm in the Mediterranean Sea which results in sudden rain and snow in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh.

WDs play an important role in the development of Rabi crops in the region.
