Moderate Hurriyat to study Centre’s peace package

Srinangar : The Hurriyat Conference led by moderate Mirwaiz Umer Farooq on Monday is expected to reply Centre’s Kashmir initiatives.

Hurriyat chairman Farooq said they have convened a meeting of the executive and general council to discuss Centre’s eight-point peace package and decide on the issue.

Union Home Minister last week announced an eight-point formula for easing volatile Kashmir situation after months of violence which took nearly 110 lives since June 11.

Under the 8-point initiative, one was to address the unrest in the Kashmir Valley. A group of interlocutors is being appointed to hold a “sustained dialogue” with various shades of opinion.

About 200 youths detained for stone-pelting are being released and the presence of security personnel is being de-scaled.

The notification of areas as “disturbed” will be reviewed which could pave the way for non-application of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in certain parts which will cease to be treated as disturbed.
