Student killed in Kashmir, triggers protest

Srinagar : The death of a student in Kupwara in an army ambush on Friday night has triggered fresh protests in north Kashmir even as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the tragedy.

Reports said the student- 22-year-old Manzoor Ahmad Magray-was killed during an operation by the Army near Chogal Handwara in north Kashmir?s Kupwara district.

The victim allegedly had refused to heed to the amry warnings after he went out in the night in the area where the soldiers had laid an ambush.

The incident sparked a protest in the area with locals claiming he was killed in cold blood.

The protesters had intercepted traffic on Srinagar- Kupwara Road.

According to Kashmir media reports, police have registered a murder case against Army in connection with the killing of Manzoor.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has condemned the killing of Manzoor.

“How can one not condemn the death of 21 yr old Manzoor at the hands of the army late last night. Another needless death in a bloody Kashmir,” he tweeted.

“I’m even more upset with the knowledge that if a suggestion of mine, made in the unified command could have avoided this incident.

“Have been trying to understand the circumstances. Lots of questions but not enough answers at the moment,” he said.
