Cross-voting in Karnataka setback to Sangma

Cross-voting by BJP legislators in Karnataka resulted in UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee polling more votes than his rival P.A. Sangma in the presidential election.

Out of the total 223 votes in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled state, Mukherjee, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate got 117 votes valued at 15,327 against 103 votes valued at 13,493 for Sangma, who was backed by the BJP and other opposition parties, said official sources.

Three votes were invalid.

The BJP has 120 members in the 225-member assembly.
