Five killed as truck plunges into river near Thane

Thane : Five people, including three children, on their way back from a wedding were killed and 14 injured when their truck plunged into a river near this Maharashtra town early Wednesday, police said.

The truck in which the victims was travelling lost control on a bridge over the Wardre river and plunged into the river around 2.30 a.m.

“They belonged to a wedding party and were returning from Virar to their homes in Warai village after attending the marriage ceremonies there,” Dalvi told IANS.

The deceased are Sudha S. Bhoir (30), her two-year-old daughter Jahnvi as well as cousins Harshala M. Bhoir (18), Atul A. Bhoir (7) and Ankita S. Bhoir (4).

Of the injured, 11 were being treated at the Manor civil hospital, while three who are reported to be serious were rushed to Bhagwati Hospital at Borivli in Mumbai, around 90 km from here.

The vehicle driver, Sudam Bhoir, who lost his wife and daughter, was among the injured and has been detained by the police.
