Sand mafia assaults Maharashtra official

Sangli, Maharashtra : While the nation comes to term with the brutal burning down of an additional collector by the oil mafia in Maharashtra, another government official was assaulted by the state’s sand mafia goons for doing his duty.

The state’s revenue official Srinivas Patil was wounded in an attack on Jan 25 when he intercepted a tractor with sand at Sheragon village of Tasgaon in Sangli district.

Revenue official Srinivas Patil said he was trying to stop the tractor when the goons attacked him. Patil was on motor.
Four people have been arrested in this connection.

“I urge the government to crack down on the mafia,” said Patil.

Sumaira Abdulali, a local activist, was also attacked a year ago for protesting the sand mafia, the former claimed.

Maharashtra Police earlier raided over 200 locations across the state after Home Minister RR Patil ordered a crackdown on oil mafia following the killing of Malegaon additional district collector (ADC) Yashwant Sonawane.

According to reports, the police have started raiding all mafias dealing in milk, fuel and illegal sand across Maharshtra.
