Cyclonic storm ”Jal”weakens into deep depression

Chennai : The cyclonic storm ”Jal” which weakened into a deep depression Sunday night over southwest Bay of Bengal moved Northwestwards and crossed between north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts close to north of Chennai and Nellore in the early hours of Monday, the weathermen said.

Since the winds turned out only to be a low pressure rather than a cyclonic storm as feared earlier, no damage was reported.

Rains had disrupted life here and in other parts of Tamil Nadu inundating low-lying areas.

So far, two persons have been killed in rain-related incidents.

The weather office said there would be heavy to moderate rains in one or two places in north Tamil Nadu as major parts of the state had experienced gusty winds in past 24 hours.

The sources also said the deep depression would move west-northwestwards and weaken gradually.
