The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday asked the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) to stop distributing free television sets as a part of their election campaign across Tamil Nadu.
“District Collectors and the Heads of Departments have been asked to stop forthwith distribution of free colour TVs till the elections process is over,” Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar said in a statement.
He said disciplinary action will be taken against politicians not abiding by the order.
Muthuvel Karunanidhi-led DMK introduced distribution of free colour TV sets among masses as one of its schemes in its election manifesto for Assembly polls held in 2006.
This year, Tamil Nadu will go to polls on April 13.
