Lankan Navy shot dead Indian fisherman

Panic struck the fishing community in coastal Tamil Nadu after the Sri Lanka Navy shot dead an Indian and injured another in the common sea waters close to Indian coastal area, police said on Thursday.

The Indian Coast Guard is investigating the firing incident.

The slain fisherman’s body has been kept at a government hospital at Pudukottai for autopsy, where many members of the fishing community assembled venting ire over the incident.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh for the fisherman’s family, based in Pudukottai.

Family sources told the investigating officials that the victims had gone for fishing inside the Indian territory in the Jadapattinam area.

The agitated fishing community put a road blockade on Wednesday night, hours after the incident and blamed the Indian authorities for failing to ensure safety of its people.
