SC slams CBI for ?slow probe? against Mayawati

New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Monday slammed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for slow probe into corruption charges against Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati.

Criticizing the federal investigative agency for the slow pace in the probe, the apex court said, ?If the CBI and Maywati are together, let the petition go.?

The CBI had told the Supreme Court in August that it had enough evidence to prosecute Mayawati, which was a complete reversal of the CBI?s stance earlier this year.

The CBI had formerly indicated that it was satisfied with the findings of an investigation by Income Tax authorities, which cleared the Bahaujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) chief.

Mayawati is charged with amassing wealth disproportionate to her known sources of income.

Her income rose from Rs one crore in 2003 to Rs 50 crore in 2007, with the chief minister claiming that the money has been received through donations, starting from Rs 5, over the years from party workers for her birthday.

The Opposition camp has claimed that the Centre was going soft on Mayawati after her party lent its support to the government during a crucial vote in the Parliament.
