7 drowned as trawler capsizes midstream in West Bengal

Kakdweep, West Bengal : At least seven people drowned and many more went missing when a trawler capsized midstream during high tide in Muriganga river here in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas on Wednesday.

The trawler, carrying 80 passengers, were crossing the river when the accident occurred.

Seven bodies have been fished out while 12 were still missing, reports said.

Meanwhile, Disaster Managament Team, health officials and administrative personnel; rushed to the spot to monitor and assist in rescue operations.

The holidayers were on a government-conducted tour even though they availed of the local transport to cross the river which perhaps led to the mishap.

Kakdweep is a favoured tourist destination in North 24 Parganas of West Bengal, a few hours drive from Kolkata.
