West Bengal to have Netaji monument: Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata  : The West Bengal government Wednesday announced that it would build a monument to honour the country’s great freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

“Netaji had about four or five cottas of land at Kodalia (in South 24 Parganas district). We will set up the monument in Netaji’s name on that land,” Banerjee said at the nationalist leader’s 116th birth anniversary celebrations here.

Earlier, the state government had decided to accord heritage status to Bose’s ancestral house at Kodalia.

“The government has decided to accord heritage status to the ancestral house at Kodalia. We may acquire the land, if needed,” Banerjee said Tuesday on the eve of Netaji’s birthday celebrations.

“We will renovate the heritage house,” the chief minister said.

Banerjee Wednesday said the government would like to complete the works for both the monument and the heritage house within one year.

This is the first time the state government has organised the birthday celebrations with the Netaji Research Bureau at “Netaji Bhavan” here.
