3 militants killed in infiltration attempt

Srinagar : The Army on Saturday said it had foiled a major infiltration attempt in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir and had killed three militants in a gunfight near the India-Pakistan border.

The army had been on alert after expressing apprehension of an increased presence of militants in the follow up to winter, and said that this incident and other ones indicated of several large-scale infiltration attempts from random points on the border.

An army spokesperson said the troops early on Saturday had noticed a group of militants trying to sneak in across the Pakistani side of the Line of Control (LoC) and engaged them in the gunbattle.

Saturday?s incident comes two days after the Indian Army had killed three Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) just 15 km from Srinagar after receiving a tip-off about their presence.
