Aus vs Sri : Downpour grounds Aussie-Lanka clash
Colombo : Heavy rainfall on Saturday played spoilsport grounding Australia?s clash with Sri Lanka after the co-hosts choosing to bat first scored 146 for 3 in 32.5 overs.
Captain Kumar Sangakkara (73*) was leading Sri Lanka?s offence towards a respectable total along with Thilan Samaraweera (34*) for the fourth wicket partnership before rain drew covers on the day’s play.
A total of over 250 ? a handsome one the turning track ? seemed to be on Sangakkara?s mind as he skillfully and responsibly shared two good partnerships Mahela Jayawardene and Samaraweera.
The game appeared lopsided in Australia?s favour in the early overs with Tillakaratne Dilshan (4) getting caught at the slip in paceman Shaun Tait’s first over and opener Upul Tharanga (6) knocked off by a brilliant catch by Steve Smith off Brett Lee.
It was Sangakkara’s steady willow that brought home 73 in 102 balls for the Lankans, moving them towards what could have been the competitive total.
But the intervention of the elements concluded the promising match to a no-result and one point was awarded to each team.
