Chennai Police summon Lalit Modi in funds case
The Chennai Police have summoned former Indian Premier League (IPL) Commissioner Lalit Modi to the city in January in a funds misappropriation case.
According to reports, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary N Srinivasan, while filing the complaint a few months ago, mentioned Modi misappropriated funds during allotment of media and free commercial rights for IPL 3.
Chennai City Police Commissioner T. Rajendran told NDTV news channel criminal action under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 172 will be taken against Modi if he fails to appear before the investigating team on the scheduled date.
Modi?s interrogation is likely to be conducted between January 3 and 7.
On Monday, the Indian cricket board received another setback after the Bombay High Court refused to stay its single bench order stalling the proceedings of the disciplinary committee against Modi.
After hearing both the parties, Justice Abhay Oka and Justice U D Salvi refused to stay the order passed on Dec 25, by Justice S J Kathawala who had stalled the proceedings against Modi.
The BCCI had asked for a stay on that order and appealed that the meeting of the Disciplinary Committee, comprising Arun Jaitley, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Chirayu Amin, be allowed to be held on Dec 27 and 28.
But the High Court refused to allow the proceedings and deferred it till Jan 10.
Justice Kathawala had granted relief to Modi saying that a prima facie case had been made out for staying the proceedings of BCCI Disciplinary Committee.
