Chennai defeat RCB to retain IPL trophy

MS Dhoni brought back smiles into the faces of Tamil people located all over the world for the second consecutive time on Saturday as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 58 runs in the high profile IPL final match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here on Saturday night.

Full Scorecard

In 2010, Chennai Super Kings had won the third edition of the premier and cash rich Indian Premier League (IPL).

On Saturday night, Chennai Super Kings scored a mammoth 205 runs for the loss of five wickets after they chose to bat first with both the openers MEK Hussey and M.Vijay scoring a gallant 159 runs first wicket partnership.

Mike Hussey scored 63 runs before losing his wicket to Syed Mohammad and Murali Vijay contributed a match-winning 95 runs with his bat in this crucial encounter.

Vijay scored 95 runs from 52 deliveries, hitting four boundaries and six over boundaries in the match.

Vijay was dismissed by Aravind in the 18.1 over of the match with the Chennai score card showing 188 runs for the loss of one wicket at the packed stadium.

The Chennai supporters cheered aloud as they saw their batsmen tearing apart the RCB bowlers.

MS Dhoni (22) , SK Raina (8) and JA Morkel (2) lost their wickets in quick succession at the end of the innings as they tried to add more runs.

S Badrinath (0*) and D Bravo, who cleared the ball out of the park in the lone ball he had faced in the match, put an end to the CSK innings as the score card showed 205 runs for the loss of five wickets.

The only man that could have shattered the hopes of Chennai fans on Saturday evening was Chris Gayle.

But like a nicely shaped up soap opera that unveils several surprises, the MA Chidambaram Stadium also restored several surprises in it as the mighty C Gayle got dismissed in the first over of the match.

Gayle, who played with the opposition bowlers all throughout the IPL season 4, was caught behind by Dhoni off Ashwin.

The RCB score card at that moment looked one run for the loss of one wicket.

RCB had a terrific start to the run chase in a match where only a storm by Gayle could have only ushered some chances of winning the cup.

The entire gang of RCB supporters and even the owners looked disappointed as Gayle departed towards the dug-out without scoring a single run in the all important match.

The RCB batsmen kept on losing wickets at regular intervals with none of them able to put up any resistance to the Chennai bowlers.

MA Agarwal (10), AB de Villiers (18), LA Pomersbach (2), DL Vettori (0), A Mithun (11) kept on returning back from the crease one after the other without contributing runs with their long handle.

Virat Kohli (35) and Saurabh Tiwary, who remained unbeaten on 42 runs, tried to pull the RCB score to respectable number as they had already lost hopes for becoming the IPL champions.

S Tiwary hit three sixes in the match along with a boundary to give something to the RCB fans to cheer aloud in the otherwise disappointing night for them.

The CSK spinner bowled well on Saturday as they picked up six RCB batsmen in the match.

Even partimer Raina took one wicket to give Dhoni his second massive success in this year.

Pacer Bollinger and Bravo shared one wicket each in the match.
