Australian captain Ricky Ponting struck his 30th ODI century as the defending champions made 260 for six in 50 overs against India in the quarterfinal of the World Cup at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera here on Thursday.
Ponting?s 118-ball 104 was an example of grit and determination and came as a big relief for the Tasmanian, who had struggled with form having scored just 102 runs in his last five innings.
For India, spearhead Zaheer Khan, left-arm spinner Yuvraj Singh and offie Ravichandran Ashwin picked up two wickets each.
Ponting?s second successive century against India in the World Cup pulled out the four-time World Champions from a dangerous 150 for four.
Australian openers Brad Haddin (53) and Shane Watson (25) made a slow start and after they departed, the team suffered a mini collapse as Haddin, Michael Clarke (8) and Mike Hussey (3) departed for just 40 runs.
Ponting and David Hussey (38) then added some valuable 55 runs for the sixth wicket to take Australia to a competitive total.
