Madhya Pradesh rail tragedy kills 21

Shivpuri (Madhya Pradesh) : At least 21 people were killed and over 50 injured after a goods train collided with a passenger train at Badarwas railway station in Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh in the wee hours of Monday.

Railway officials said that the accident took place amidst heavy rains as the goods train rammed into stationary Indore-Gwalior Inter-City express from the front.

The collision took place around 4:45 am when it was raining heavily, hampering rescue operations.

Officials said several bodies had been taken out from the two general bogies of the express that was hit by the goods train. The two bogies that were hit by the goods train were general compartments.

Officials said prima facie the accident could be owing to a mistake of the goods train driver.

In a rail accident in West Bengal in June, more than 60 people were killed when a speeding train crashed into another waiting on a platform in Sainthia station, barely two months after a derailment in the same state’s West Midnapore district that claimed at least 148 lives and was blamed on a Maoist-backed group.
