MIG crashes near Kalaikunda, pilot safe
West Midnapore (West Bengal) : A military warplane on a sortie crashed on a field near Kalaikunda Air Force station soon after the pilot ejected in this border district on Friday morning, police said.
The pilot, yet to be identifed, was rescued about 10 kms away from the accident site at Dhuria village under Ramgarh, about 40 kms from the air base.
Local villagers informed the police about the accident of the MIG 27 on an isolated area near a pond. The the plane caused about a two-metre crater as it plunged on the field burning.
The parts of aricraft littered around some 500 metres.
An FIR said the MIG 27 caught fire in the air after take off from Kalaikunda air base for usual sortie at about 8:25 am and it plunged on the field.
An IAF helicopter went for rescuing the pilot, who was taken back to the base for treatment, police said.
” The warplane accident is nothing new to us in this area,” a local youth said, who collected some wreckage from the area and handed over to the local police.
