Militant, soldier killed in Kashmir encounter

The police on Wednesday said that it, along with an unit of army, has killed a militant in the ongoing encounter at model town Sopore, which also left one army officer dead.

Acting on specific information about the presence of armed militants in the area, the police and an unit of the army laid a siege on Tuesday evening. The operation was halted for the night to avoid collateral damages and resumed on Wednesday morning.

One unidentified militant was killed in the encounter. The militants had earlier fired upon the searching party resulting in severe injuries to an army officer, who later succumbed, the police said.

Meanwhile, the police said it had foiled an attempt by miscreants to stage violent protest in Sopore on Wednesday.

Miscreants surfaced in Chan Khan, main town and bus stand areas of Sopore, and resorted to stone pelting on security forces deployments, the police said in a statement. However they were chased away without use of force, and situation in these areas was brought to normal.
