Sri Lanka war crimes: AIADMK dissatisfied with PM’s response

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Wednesday said India should support the US-sponsored resolution on the war crimes allegedly committed during Sri Lanka’s civil war and added that she was not satisfied with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s response on this issue.

“I had written two letters to the prime minister saying India should support the resolution by America against Sri Lanka. I am not satisfied with the prime minister’s reply,” Jayalalitha told reporters here.

“There was no commitment in the letter sent by the prime minister. The AIADMK is not satisfied,” she said.

The allegations of “war crimes” during Colombo’s civil war with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) that ended 2009 triggered a massive uproar in parliament Tuesday.

The government has indicated that it has not made up its mind on the resolution before the United Nations High Commission on Human Rights (UNHCHR) in Geneva on the war crimes.

In his letter to both Jayalalithaa and DMK chief M. Karunanidhi, Manmohan Singh said India had always attached “high priority” to the safety, prosperity and well-being of the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna is expected to make a statement on the Sri Lankan issue in parliament later Wednesday.
