Srikrishna report on Telegana today?

Amid fears of a turmoil in Andhra Pradesh, the five-member Srikrishna committee report on Telangana statehood is likely to be presented to the Union Home Minister on Thursday, media reports said.

The term of the committee expires on Dec 31, the deadline for the submission of the report.

At a press conference on Tuesday, the committee chairman and former Supreme Court Judge Justice B N Srikrishna had informed that the report will be submitted to Home Minister P Chidambaram by Dec 31.

He hoped the report will offer a solution to the divisive demands for the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

“We assume it is a permanent solution. But it is for the Government to think over it and find a solution and it is for the people to accept it,” he said.

He also expressed hope that all political parties in the state will accept the report and maintain peace and harmony.

“I hope peace prevails in the state after the report is submitted. It is the responsibility of the politicians and the media,” Justice Srikrishna said.

“Several options with their pros and cons,” the panel’s Member-Secretary Vinod K Duggal said to a poser on how many options the committee will present to the government.

“Hopefully, the largest number of people will have the highest sense of satisfaction with the report. I hope we will achieve that,” Duggal said.

The committee was constituted by the Centre on Feb 3 to gauge people’s reaction to the Telegana issue.

The committee, in the past ten months, had visited all 23 districts of Andhra Pradesh.

On Dec 9, 2009, the Government of India announced that the process for the formation of Telangana state would be considered upon introduction and passage of a separation statement by the state assembly of Andhra Pradesh.

The Centre has since constituted the Srikrishna committee to study the feasibility of a separate Telangana state within the Indian Union.
