Kashmir is indeed the heaven of the world. Many people in India plan to visit Kashmir in the month of May or June on their kids’ summer vacation. You will find many scenic valleys, mountains top filled with snow, and pleasant weather. Hence, many tourists get attracted to Kashmir.
Here are very importants tips if you are visiting in the month of May or June:
1. Bring warmers/sweaters (Even if you are visiting in May)
Even if you are visiting in summer and temperature in Srinagar could be around 27 degrees at day time but it will be reduced in the nighttime. Also, it will be way lower in points like Gulmarg, Sonmarg, and Pahalgam. Hence, make sure you bring warmers for adults and sweaters/gloves for kids.
2. Be ready to travel more to see snow in May or June (Summer)
Snow in Kashmir tourist points like Gulmarg, and Sonmarg starts melting at end of April, and hence, you will see snow only on top of the mountains. In case, you want to touch snow then you have to travel like 3-5 km either by horse or car.
For Gulmarg: You have to book Gondola tickets in advance to see snow. Make sure you buy a Gondola ticket for Phase 2 as well. Gondola tickets get sold out quickly so book it before 1 week at least. Even after buying tickets, expect you to be in a queue to get into Gondola.
For Sonmarg: In Sonmarg, you have two options. One is by Sumo/Tavera (which they may quote around 3000 INR per vehicle) and second is horse riding (which could be around 1200 INR.). I would suggest you choose the horse option in which they will take you to glaciers (around 4-5 Kms from the parking area). If you go by car they you hardly touch snow so avoid taking vehicles during May or June.
For Pahalgam: This is a beautiful place. It has pleasant weather but you will see snow at top of the mountains. During the month of May, you will not see snow in Chandanwari (the most popular place in Pahalgam) as well.
3, Don’t miss to visit Sinthan Top in the month of May or June
If you are planning for May or June, you will have very few where you can touch snow or plan with snow. For Sonmarg and Gulmarg, you have to ride on a horse and buy Gondola tickets respectively. If none of these go in your favor and you want to touch snow then have Sinthan Top in your itinerary.
You can plan for the Sinthan top from Pahalgam (110 Kms – 3.5 Hrs) or from Anantnag (71 Kms, 2 Hrs). If you are going by small vehicles like a hatchback, sedan, or SUV then you can go on your own. If you are planning by 19 seaters, minibus or bus then you can hire Sumo/Tavera from Pahalgam which will cost around 5600 Rs.
4. Carry your postpaid SIM or buy a prepaid sim from Jammu & Kashmir
If you have a prepaid card from states other than Jammu & Kashmir then it won’t work in Jammu & Kashmir. If you have a postpaid connection then it will work throughout in J&K. In case, you don’t have a PostPaid connection then you can buy new prepaid SIM from J&K. You should carry your Aadhar card to buy a new SIM and it will be activated in 2-4 Hrs.
From my experience, Airtel and Jio have very good coverage in Jammu & Kashmir including tourist points far from Srinagar. Vodafone has many issues with its coverage and strength of signals.
