Compact Vehicles on a Larger Scale in India

It seems like that compact vehicles are raining in India now days. Almost every automobile manufacturer is launching compact vehicles in different segments. We tried to find out the reasons behind the success and popularity of compact cars. First of all a question arise that which car has to be called a compact car? The answer is that if we go by definition then a compact car is a vehicle that has smaller dimensions than its predefined segment. A vehicles’ segment has been decided by its body type for example SUV, Sedan or Hatchback are predefined segments and we further divide these segments on the basis of size like compact cars and subcompact cars.

When we started to do research, we find that the biggest reason behind the success of these compact cars is their compactness; secondly the compact size makes the vehicle more agile and fuel-efficient. These reasons make compact vehicles perfect for city traffic and that’s why they are targeting a mass sector i.e urban middle class nuclear families. There are compact vehicles in all the segments; we have listed out these compact vehicles for you. Let’s have a look at these..

Compact SUVs:
India is the second most emerging market for SUVs in the world after China, and there are some 10 to 12 SUVs launching per year. But the trend shows that the fondness for compact SUVs has been increased recently, there are a lot of compact SUVs already launched in the country by different manufacturers. Starting with the luxury SUV segment, there are Audi Q3, BMW X1, Skoda Yeti and Hyundai Santa Fe, all these cars are doing well. Compact MPVs:
MPVs or multipurpose vehicles are known for their oversize dimensions so they can accommodate 7 to 8 passengers and luggage according to need, but here also compact vehicles are very successful. Maruti Suzuki launched the Ertiga earlier this year, which has become the segment leader in a very short span of the time. The car has enough space to accommodate 7 passengers easily and its sleek and compact size makes it more fuel efficient and agile on busy city streets. There are also some upcoming MPVs as well, which includes Mahindra Mini Xylo, Chevrolet Enjoy and Nissan Evalia.

Compact Sedans:
Compact sedans are the most popular category of compact vehicles in India as there are some most successful cars falls into this category. Suzuki Swift Dzire is a compact sedan, which has a sub-four meter length. There is also tricky part in this, in India the sub-four meter length cars get special excise-duty benefits, there is only 4% tax for a sub-four meter length car in compare to 12% excise-duty for larger cars. To avail this excise-duty benefits most of the manufacturers are going to launch their compact sedans soon including New Ambassador CS, Tata Indigo Manza CS,and Mahindra Verito CS etc.

Compact Hatchbacks:
A hatchback is a five door small car and it seems a little strange to use this term compact hatch but yes there are also compact hatches are available in the country. Whereas Maruti Swift, Volkswagen Polo, Skoda Fabia, Hyundai i20 etc. are full-grown hatches, Tata Nano, Hyundai EON, Alto 800 are compact hatches. Compact hatches do exceptionally well in India because of affordable prices and great fuel efficiency.

So, as we seen there are a lot of compact cars in every segment in the country and even more cars are going to be launched soon. These all-compact vehicles are doing well and they will continue to do so in future too. The compact cars are not only become famous in India but in the whole world and biggest reason behind their success are the compactness, better fuel efficiency and affordable prices. These cars are also environment friendly as the more refined and small engines emit lesser carbon than the massive engines of big vehicles.
