BIS grants quality license for IGNOU center at Tihar jail

New Delhi : The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) center at Tihar jail in New Delhi was recently authorized by a license for quality management systems certification provided by the Bureau of Indian Standards.

The Bureau, by virtue of the power conferred on it by the Bureau of Indian Standards Act 1986 (63 of 1986), has the power to grant the right and license to be listed in the Bureau?s register of Licenses of Quality Management Systems Certification.

?The license is valid for three years till October 12, 2013 and may be renewed as prescribed in the regulations,? said the license for the quality management systems certification by the bureau to the IGNOU.

The Tihar jail students are educationally nurtured with the help of study centers established by the university as well as by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) at the Tihar jail where about 2640 and 1900 inmate students are enrolled respectively.

Many new courses like Bachelor or Art/ Commerce/Preparatory Programme Diploma in Creative Writing in Hindi/English, Certificate in Human Rights, Masters in Tourism/Management/Computers Post Graduate Diploma in Distance Education are the main course studied in Tihar Jail.

The inmates also have the facility to study about Gandhian philosophy where more than 500 books on the topic are available.

IGNOU as well as NIOS bears the expenditure on fees for the courses and study material like note-books, pens, etc. to the inmates.
