Adarsh scam: Opposition demands govt dismissal

Maharashtra Opposition parties on Monday met Governor K Sankaranarayanan and demanded dismissal of the Ashok Chavan government over the Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society scam.

The Opposition parties? delegation, led by Leader of the Opposition in state Assembly Eknath Khadse, included members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena.

?We demanded immediate sacking of the Chavan ministry and pointed out to the Governor that the image of the state government and that of the state has taken a beating due to the blatant corruption of those involved in the scam,” Sena leader Diwakar Raote said.

The parties also urged the Governor to initiate criminal proceedings against ministers and bureaucrats whose names figure in the scam.

Chavan has been sucked into a major controversy over allotment of flats to civilians and his kin at the Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society, which was originally meant for Kargil war widows.

Several top defence personnel had also got allotment in the Society, but they have resigned from membership of the Society after the scam was exposed.

The chief minister could also lose his job over the issue, with the Congress high command waiting to take a final decision of Chavan?s resignation, which he submitted to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Saturday.
