Bhullar’s wife moves SC for suspending his execution

New Delhi  :  Navneet Kaur, the wife of death row prisoner Devenderpal Singh Bhullar, Tuesday moved the Supreme Court for immediate suspension of his execution following his conviction for the 1993 Delhi bomb blast that killed nine people.

But, the apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir, however, declined to pass any order as senior counsel Ram Jethmalani mentioned the matter before it.

Jethmalani told the court that preparations were being made to hang Bhullar like Mumbai attack terrorist Ajmal Kasab and parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Navneet Kaur has contended that the rejection of her husband’s mercy petition after an inordinate delay was based on “non-application of mind, non-consideration of relevant circumstances and presumably made on extraneous grounds and/or irrelevant facts”.

Dismissing Bhullar’s his plea that challenged the rejection of his mercy plea by the president, the Supreme Court April 12 had refused to commute his death sentence to life imprisonment.

Bhullar had filed a mercy petition on Jan 14, 2003, which was rejected by the president May 25, 2011.

Bhullar was given capital punishment for the 1993 blast at the Youth Congress office, a stone’s throw from Parliament House in Delhi, which left nine dead. The attack was targeted against then Youth Congress leader M.S. Bitta.
