Court grants bail to Asaduddin Owaisi

Hyderabad  : An Andhra Pradesh court Thursday granted bail to MIM chief and MP Asaduddin Owaisi in a seven-year-old case of rioting and roughing up an officer.

A sessions court in Sangareddy town of Medak district near Hyderabad granted bail to the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) president, who was in jail since Monday.

The court directed him to submit two sureties of Rs.10,000 each and appear before it Feb 2.

Owaisi moved court after his two bail petitions were dismissed in as many days by a lower court.

The MIM leader’s lawyer sought bail on the ground that he had to preside over a public meeting being organised by the party in Hyderabad in the night on the occasion of Milad-un-Nabi.

He told the court that all arrangements were made for the meeting and some foreign speakers were also invited.

Owaisi Monday appeared before the judicial first class magistrate, seeking recall of a non-bailable warrant (NBW) pending against him in connection with a case booked against him in 2005. The court, however, dismissed his plea and sent him to judicial custody till Feb 2. The MP was later shifted to a jail in Sangareddy.

Asaduddin Owaisi, his younger brother Akbaruddin Owaisi and other MIM leaders were booked by police when they prevented officials from demolishing a place of worship for road expansion at Mutangi village in Medak district. They allegedly manhandled the then district collector.

The magistrate dismissed Owaisi’s bail petitions Tuesday and Wednesday. The court also pulled up the MP for not appearing before it since 2009, though a warrant was pending against him.

Akbaruddin Owaisi, who is presently in a jail in Adilabad district in a hate speech case, was presented before a Sangareddy court by police Jan 16. The court adjourned the hearing till Jan 28.
