Karunanidhi not to meet Sonia in Delhi

Under the shadow of DMK MP Kanimozhi’s jail in the 2G spectrum scam and souring of the ties between Congress and former, DMK president M Karunanidhi said he would be going to Delhi on Monday, but would “not get an opportunity to meet Sonia Gandhi.”

“I may not get an opportunity to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi,” the former Tamil Nadu chief minister and the
Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) patriarch was quoted saying in media.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would host a dinner Sunday night to mark the second anniversary of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre, but none of the top leaders of its constituent DMK is likely to attend. Reports said there would be a token attendance in the dinner.

Karunanidhi usually meets Sonia Gandhi when in New Delhi.

The DMK supremo will be in Delhi to meet his daughter Kanimozhi, now lodged in Tihar Jail, where she was sent by a special Delhi court in the 2G scam case.

Whether Karunanidhi would meet Kanimozhi in court or jail is not known.

Karunanidhi earlier said there is a vendetta against his family and his daughter is innocent.

DMK MP Kanimozhi was on Friday arrested after a special Delhi court rejected her bail plea in the 2G scam case, paving the way for her imprisonment in the Tihar jail.

The bail plea of Sharad Kumar, the managing director of Kanimozhi’s family-run Kalaignar TV, was also rejected.

Kanimozhi is a stake holder in the Karunanidhi family owned and run Kalaignar TV, which is allegedly one of the beneficiaries of the 2G scam money. She has been chargesheeted as the controlling mind behind the TV company by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Justice OP Saini said bail was dismissed “due to the magnitude of the crime and the nature and enormity of the allegations” which forced him not to show any consideration to her despite she being a woman with a very dignified conduct in the court.

The judge said the “bail applications are without merit and hence dismissed.”

The court in its 144-page order arguing against a bail held that since most of the witnesses against Kanimozhi are the employees of Kalaignar TV there is a possibility of their being influenced.

She is llodged in the Tihar Jail where her party colleague A Raja is now languishing.
