Polling begins on a sedate note in Agra

Polling began in Agra Tuesday amid tight security arrangements as part of the sixth phase of UP assembly elections covering 68 seats spreading over 13 districts.

Early morning walkers turned up at some of the polling booths to press the button in the Taj city. “The morning chill and a light cloud cover seems to be deterring voters to come out in full force, but it is too early,” said Vimla, a home-maker showing the new status symbol, the indelible ink mark, a proof of having cast the vote.

“The arrangements are in place and there is no restrictions on the movement of vehicles. This should see a fairly good percentage this time,” said Sharad Bansal, a voter who turned up early with his family.

Para-military forces took over 24 hours ago and instructions for the media were issued Monday evening. Arrangements have been made for net-casting from 50 polling booths. The advance distribution of voters’ ID card has facilitated the process, party workers said.

“Interestingly, the new enthusiasm that the first time voters and people in the so-called posh colonies are showing augurs well for the democratic system,” said activist Sudhier Gupta.

For the nine assembly seats in Agra district, more than a hundred candidates and 25 political parties are in the fray.
