Four tremors felt in Delhi

New Delhi  :  Four tremors of minor intensity shook the national capital Tuesday within a span of four hours, said an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). There were no reports of any damage.

“Four minor tremors ranging from 2.5 to 3.3 on the Richter scale were felt in Delhi,” R.S. Dattatreya, director of the department of seismology at the IMD, told IANS.

Dattatreya said the epicentre was in Delhi and neighbouring areas. “All tremors lasted for three-four minutes.”

The first tremor measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale jolted Delhi and its neighbouring areas around 12.40 a.m. It was followed by a second one at 1.41 a.m. measuring 3.3.

The last two tremors, measuring 2.5 and 2.8 on the Richter scale, occurred at 1.55 a.m. and 3.40 a.m., respectively.

Many people felt the tremors and ran out of their houses.

“I was watching TV when suddenly my bed started shaking. Initially, I thought I was drowsy but then I realised it was an earthquake,” said Ravi Kumar, a resident of east Delhi.

“I woke up my family and we all came out of our house in the open. A few of our neighbours were also outside… after some time we went back,” said Kritika Kapoor, a housewife.
