Iranian terror suspect flees Thailand
An Iranian who lost both his legs in a bomb blast in Thailand has been arrested along with a compatriot while a third Iranian managed to board a flight for Malaysia Tuesday night, a top official said Wednesday.
The second suspect was arrested at the Bangkok international airport, BBC reported.
The third suspect has fled to Kuala Lumpur, immigration official Lt. Gen. Wiboon Bangthamai was quoted as saying.
Thailand’s National Security Council (NSC) has said possible links to blasts targeting Israeli diplomats in India and Georgia were also being investigated.
The explosives found in Bangkok were similar to those used in other attacks.
“Based on the equipment and materials we found, they were aimed at individuals and the destruction capacity was not intended for large crowds or big buildings,” said NSC chief Wichean Potephosree.
Police said magnets were also found at the house taken on rent by the Iranian suspects. The devices used in New Delhi and Georgian capital Tbilisi were attached to vehicles using magnets.
The two attacks took place Monday. An Israeli diplomat was injured in the New Delhi attack, after a motorcycle rider attached an explosive device to the back door of the car.
Three blasts took place in central Bangkok Tuesday. The first explosion occurred at a house which the three suspects were believed to have rented for a month.
Two men managed to escape the explosion that severely damaged the house, but a third man who suffered minor injuries tried to hail a taxi. When the taxi refused to stop, he threw a bomb at it.
The third explosion took place when police arrived at the scene and the same man then attempted to throw another bomb at them, but missed. The man lost his legs when the explosive blew up.
The US and Britain have issued travel advisories for Thailand.
