A Saudi diplomat was shot dead by unknown attackers near the Saudi Arabia consulate in Pakistan?s Karachi town on Monday.

Hassan al-Khatani, a junior officer at the Saudi embassy, was driving his way out of the building when two attackers shot him repeatedly and fled on a motorcycle.

“The consulate employee died of multiple bullet wounds on the spot,” Inspector General of Sindh Police Fayyaz Ahmad Leghari was quoted as saying by Geo TV.

The police said they are investigating if the incident is linked to the killing of al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden by US Navy Seals in Abbottabad on May 2.

On May 11, two low-intensity explosions took place the Saudi Arabia consulate in Karachi.

According to the police, attackers lobbed two homemade explosive devices at the consulate building and fled in a motorcycle.

One blast occurred near the consulate?s boundary wall, while another device exploded in the bushes outside the building.

No one was killed or injured in the attack.

“There were no casualties. But we have stepped up security at all foreign consulates in Karachi,” a senior police official told media.

No terrorist group had claimed responsibility of the blasts.
