CFL: Mohun Bagan beat BNR Sports

Kolkata : Mohun Bagan on Monday ended their Sahara Calcutta Football League (CFL) engagement with a 2-1 win over BNR Sports Club at Yuba Bharati Krirangan here, collecting 40 points after conceding eight points from 16 games.

Midfielder Jayanta Sen scored for Mohun Bagan in the 43rd minute after a pass from Snehashsih Chakraborty and Jose Ramirez Barreto slotted home his eighth goal of the tournament two minutes later.

BNR’s striker Krishanu Banerjee, who was adjudged man of the match, sent a curling goal to reduced the goal difference into the stoppage time to show a vulnerable defence of Bagan, ahead of their I-League play late this week.

Mohun Bagan were the first team to complete the CFL with 16 plays,13 wins, two losses and one draw. They scored 45 goals and
conceded 9.

The remaining plays in the CFL are now left for the second spot.

Though Mohun Bagan are now just three points behind East Bengal, who have one match in hand to complete the tournament, Aryan, who also have not been defeated so far, are in the third spot with 28 points from 12 games. East Bengal will play their last tie with
Aryan on December 1.

After being dethroned by their arch rivals East Bengal in a derby match on Friday, Mohun Bagan, a star studded side with a budget of about Rs 8 to 10 crore, have not won any trophy this season.

Mohun Bagan, winners of CFL for past three years since 2006, have not played the Durand Cup, which was won by Chirag United, another Kolkata outfit.

The mariners took part at the Mohammedan Sporting instituted the Platinum Jubilee Cup this month to mark MDS’s first league win in 1934, also lost to East Bengal in the summit clash via tie breaker.

Mohun Bagan lost the championship race at the beginning of the season after 0-1 defeat to Aryan and drew with Chirag United.

East Bengal capitalising the five points advantage kept on the pressure on the rivals and finally nailed Mohun Bagan in the derby.

But Monday’s clear win was good beginning for Mohun Bagan for next trophy as the green and maroon will proceed to Pune to play Pune FC in the I-League on Friday.
