Little known Christian fetches $900,000; Umesh gets $750,000

Bangalore : Australian all-rounder Dan Christian was the first cricketer to go for a huge pay packet as he bought by Deccan Chargers for $900,000 while most of the players including the legendary Sanath Jayasuriya didn’t find any takers on the second day of the players’ auction of the Indian Premier League (IPL) here on Sunday.

Delhi Daredevils bought Mathew Wade for his base price of $100,000 as the cricketer became the first to be sold on Sunday. But the bidding got aggressive with South Australian Christian who was bought for 18 times his base price of $50,000.

“We believe Dan Christian is a good buy. He is good fast bowler and a decent batsman. He is also a brilliant fielder,? Chargers owner Gayathri Reddy said.

Delhi Daredevils were the biggest spenders as they bought Umesh Yadav with a base price of $50,000 went for a whopping $750,000 while former KKR pacer Ashok Dinda was bought for $375,000 while veteran pacer Ajit Agarkar was bought for $210,000.

Munaf Patel went to Mumbai Indians for $700,000 while Mohammed Kaif went unsold at the auction. India discard Venugopal Rao also got a good deal of $700,000 from Delhi Daredevils.

Among other players who went unsold are Michael Yardy of England, Jacob Oram and Kyle Mills of New Zealand, Ravi Bopara, Monty Panesar and Tim Bresnan of England and Fervez Mahroof of Sri Lanka.

Players auctioned on Sunday at 1 p.m., team-wise (figures in dollars):

Chennai Super Kings: Scott Styris, $200,000; Joginder Sharma, 150,000; Nuwan Kulasekara, 100,000; Sudeep Tyagi, 240,000.

Deccan Chargers: Daniel Christian, 900,000; Manpreet Gony, 290,000.

Delhi Daredevils: Mathew Wade, 100,000; Ajit Agarkar, 210,000; Ashok Dinda, 375,000; Umesh Yadav, 750,000; R. Van der Merwe, 50,000; Venugopal Rao, 700,000.

King?s XI Punjab: Nil.

Kochi: Thisara Perera, 80,000; R. Vinay Kumar, 475,000; Stephen O? Keefe, 20,000.

Kolkata Knight Riders: L. Balaji, 500,000; Jayadev Unadkat, 250,000.

Mumbai Indians: Munaf Patel, 700,000; Clint McKay, 110,000.

Pune: Wayne Parnell, 160,000.

Rajasthan Royals: Shaun Tait, 300,000.
