Windies claiming a major title was overdue: Dwayne Bravo

Port of Spain  : West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo says the side’s triumph in a major international tournament was long overdue.

Bravo was speaking on his return to Port of Spain after assisting Windies towards victory in the ICC Twenty20 World Cup final against hosts Sri Lanka.

“We went into the World Cup not under any pressure,” Bravo was quoted as saying by CMC.

“They cast us as favourites but we, as players, take it as one game at a time. It’s good to go into a tournament as favourites, but also better to live up to expectations and actually come out on top.”

Bravo, who turned 29 last week Sunday, returned home after a lingering groin injury ruled him out of the current Champions League T20 tournament in South Africa.

He was due to compete with his Indian Premier League (IPL) team Chennai Super Kings.

“We always had that self-belief that we’re going to do well,” He said.

“We have a very good team and once our players click at the right time, there’s no stopping us.”

In five matches during the World Cup, Bravo tallied 134 runs at an average of 33.5 with a strike rate of 118.58.

“It’s good to see all of us actually in one team, come and put our heads down and actually win a title for the West Indies,” said Bravo in reference to team camaraderie among players during the tournament.

“It’s long overdue. This format T20 suits most of us and it’s good that we can actually dominate in this format of the game.”
