M C Mary Kom in quarterfinals of World Boxing

Bridgetown (Barbados) : Indian boxer M C Mary Kom (48kg) marched towards her fifth consecutive Women?s World Championship title by advancing to the quarterfinals with a convincing victory over Australian Jenny Smith here on Tuesday.

Mary Kom beat Smith before the end of the first round as the referee had to stop the contest when the score was already 9-0 in the India?s favour.

Kom will take on Welshwoman Lynsey Holdaway in the last-eight on September 15 and she is just one win away from assuring herself of a medal in the sixth edition of the event.

But there was some heartbreak for India as well, as Neetu Chahal lost 2-12 to former world champion Katie Taylor of Ireland in the 60kg category.
