Flash flood warning in north Kashmir

A flood alert was issued Friday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district following warnings of an avalanche that could block the flow of Sindh river.

An official advisory said: “There is a possibility of an avalanche at Thajwas glacier near Sonamarg, due to which the flow of water in Sindh can possibility get affected resulting in accumulation of water.”

It said this could result in flash flood in low lying areas along the river. Ganderbal in north Kashmir is 18 km away from Srinagar.

The administration has asked police, paramilitary forces and volunteers to assist it in an emergency.
