Tamil Nadu reacts to Lanka navy firing

Taking a serious view of the firing by Sri Lankan Navy that killed an Indian in coastal Tamil Nadu, the DMK government on Thursday urged the Centre to act sternly against Colombo.

State’s Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin told the Legislative Assembly that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had mailed a telegram to New Delhi demanding strong action against the killing of a poor Tamil fisherman inside the Indian waters.

The shooting by Sri Lankan Navy also left another Indian injured.

Stalin said the state government has been apprising the Centre of such killings whenever such incidents take place in the sea water so that New Delhi takes up the issue with Sri Lanka.

Stalin’s statement came as the Opposition legislators, including AIADMK and Congress members, raised the matter in the House.

Stalin said the family of the victim, Pandian, would be given a compensation of Rs.five lakh.
