No forcible land acquisition: Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal’s chief minister-in-waiting Mamata Banerjee said there would be no forcible land acquisition in her regime and she has given her opinions and suggestions for incorporation in the proposed land acquisition law to be enacted by the centre.

“There would be no forcible land acquisition. We will show the world with our policy in West Bengal,” said Banerjee after winning a landslide victory in West Bengal elections and ending the 34 year rule of the communists.

With land acquisition and compensation to farmers roiling Uttar Pradesh now, the opinions of Mamata assumes significance after her historic win over the communists in Bengal on the plank of land battle she began with Singur and Nandigram in the past years.

Mamata Banerjee had earlier expressed her reservations over the proposed land acquisition law to be brought by the centre.

She said as a Railway Minister she created a model for such acquisition and offered jobs to land losers and the new law should not be anti-farmer or land loser.

“Bengal will show the way,” she said.

Union Minister of Rural Development Vilasrao Deshmukh, who will meet the stakeholders of the bill on May 20, said the concerns of Mamata Banerjee have been taken into account.

The land acquisition bill will be bought in the coming monsoon session of Parliament.
