WC: Suraj Randiv to replace Mathews in Sri Lanka squad

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed the Event Technical Committee of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 has approved Suraj Randiv as a replacement player for the injured Angelo Mathews in the Sri Lanka squad for the tournament.

The confirmation was conveyed to Sri Lanka Cricket on behalf of the committee on Friday. Mathews suffered a strain to his right thigh muscle which occurred during his side?s semi-final victory over New Zealand in Colombo.

Any injury or illness-based replacement requires a written submission to the event technical committee along with a diagnosis from a medical practitioner as to the extent of the injury or illness. Once replaced, a player may not return to the squad save as an approved subsequent replacement for another injured or ill player.

Randiv is a 26-year-old right-arm off-spinner from Matara who has played in 21 ODIs for Sri Lanka claiming 22 wickets at an average of 33.5. He has also represented Sri Lanka in three Test matches and six Twenty20 internationals.

As with all players in the tournament, the eligibility of a replacement player is subject to approval by the ICC before that player can be officially added to the squad.

The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 consists of David Richardson (ICC, chairman), Prof. Ratnakar Shetty (Tournament Director), Campbell Jamieson (IDI representative), Anil Kumble (host nominee), David Lloyd (independent nomination) and Sanjay Manjrekar (independent nomination).
